DEPARTMENT OF ASSAMESE

The ASSAMESE LANGUAGE  is a core subject among other Indian Languages offered at The Assam Valley School. Students taking various languages need to appear ICSE at the end of class 10. However it is offered at the ISC level from class 11 to 12 too. The Final Question Paper for ICSE is of 80 Marks:- 40 of each for Language and Literature with 20 Marks on Project Work to be assessed by the Internal and External Examiners. The Language Part includes Composition writing of 250 words for 15 Marks, Letter Writing for 7 Marks, Unseen Comprehension Passage for 10 Marks and Grammar of 8 Marks.

Literature is of 40 Marks from the two Text Books chosen from the four Books prescribed by the Board which includes Drama, Novel, Poetry and Short Stories.

The Assamese Department does not believe in traditional Methodology of teaching merely by Lecture and Chalk & Talk Method. The class room transaction is full of varities: Project Method, Action in class, Singing, Talking, Elocution, Skit presentation on relevant topics and so and so forth. For the last eight years the class average of Assamese in ICSE have been above 90 %.

At the same time the department takes all possible initiatives to promote the culture and heritage of Assam and its people.

(1) M. Music (Bhatkhande) from Lucknow in 1995.

(2) Gayan Gunin in Borgeet (Vocal) in 1992-93 from Sangeet Satra, Assam.

(3) Received Senior National Scholarship from Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, New Delhi in 1998, in the filed of indigenous Art Borgeet.

(4) Received fellowship from Sangeet Natak Akademi for the development of Music of Satriya Dance in 2003.

(5) Received Junior fellowship from the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Govt. of India, New Delhi in 2006 in the field of Hindustani Classical Music (Vocal).

(7) Published research based article relates to Sankardeva’s Borgeet (Katha Guwahati 2005).

A renowned artist Ms. Goswami has received training both in the streams of Hindustani Classical as well as Sattriya traditions of Music (Borgeet). She is a regular singer of All India Radio, Guwahati centre. She has already released more than 10 musical albums and also worked as a playback singer in Assamese feature films and TV serials.

Ms. Goswami has joined the school in January 2014 in the Department of Assamese as an Assamese language teacher.
