The transaction of English at The Assam Valley School is a transaction with a difference. The teachers take utmost interest, not only in the development of the written word, but also the spoken word. The teacher and the taught have joined hands to move the subject beyond the monotony of just textual transaction. The teacher is no more a solo performer forcing his individual point of view into the receptive and not-so-receptive minds of students in captivity. Proactive and interactive process of teaching has made the experience delightful.


Ms.Mita Nangia Goswami was the Director – Environment Education at WWF India from 2008 to 2015. She has served as a member of the National Advisory Committee on Environment Education of the Ministry of Environment and Forest as well as the NCERT (National Council of Education, Research and Training) Committee reviewing the National Curriculum Framework. She has worked in the development sector at the grassroots in the North-East since 1995 on varied issues like gender, reproductive health and nature conservation before moving to Delhi in 2008.Mita has also been an educationist, having taught both at the high school as well as the college (Honours) levels.

A member of the North-East Writers’ Forum, she has penned short stories, essays and poems and has been published by Penguin. She has also authoredarticles on Environment Education and delivered talks as well as conducted workshops on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) at various national and international platforms. Recently, Ms. Goswami has trained the Master Trainers of both CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) and NCERT in ESD at New Delhi and also the SCERTs (State Council of Education, Research and Training) and more than 200 DIETS (District Institute of Education and Training) of Assam, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh,Chhattisgarh and Karnataka. She was invited as an ESD expert to the UNESCO world conference 2014 held at Nagoya, Japan.

Ms. Prerna Gurkin was born in Darjeeling but received her education in Kolkata. She has completed her Bachelors from Loreto College and her Masters from IGNOU. Her assignments were printed by the latter as study material for their students. She has seven years of experience in teaching. She has also tried her hand at freelancing, having been the editor at Power Publishers, the leading self-publishing house in Kolkata. She has published a book for Pearson, India which was circulated in India as well as in South-East Asia. She has also been a content writer for Dermozone, a pharmaceutical company based in Jakarta, Indonesia that works on revolutionary cancer medicines. She is an avid traveller, a voracious reader and a reflective blogger. Her favourite characters are Hassan from The Kite Runner and Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird. She also enjoys reading quotes by Rumi, Anais Nin and her personal favourite, Maya Angelou. She considers herself to be a learner first and then an educator. Her dream is to get her book published and win the Man Booker Prize.

Mrs. Tamanna Seth completed her Graduation from Dibrugarh University, Assam. She is undergoing the B.Ed programme from IGNOU. She teaches English at the Lower School (Grades 6 & 7). She is the Housemistress of Subansiri House and Mistress-in-Charge of Culinary Skills, Golf and the Lead Resource Person for ‘Meet The Author’ and ‘Book Club’. She has been at AVS since 2005. She has a passion for Western Music and Dance.

Ms. Rimjhim Ghosh Pyne, who is an alumni of Calcutta Girls’ High School, did her graduation in English Honours from St. Xavier’s College Calcutta. After that she completed her double Masters Degree, first in English from University of Calcutta and then in Museology from National Museum Institute, New Delhi. She has working experience of more than twenty years in various art, cultural and educational fields. She was working as a Curator in a Museum in Delhi, before joining Assam Valley School. As a teacher she enjoys teaching her students, not only her subject English but finer things of life and moral values, which would enable them to become responsible citizens of tomorrow.

She belongs to Kanpur, UP. Having done her Bachelors in Science, Masters in English and Doctorate in the same, she has been teaching in residential schools and training in corporate for quite a few years. She likes traveling and exploring new places and meeting new people. Reading and listening to music are her favourite pastimes. She is very passionate about teaching and collecting books. Stage activities and Creative writing are her forte.
