Archives

Schools, by default are the storehouse of rich historical records. Their collection comprises of Yearbooks, flyers promoting and advertising musicals, theatre, dances or student elections, photographs, letters, issues of the school magazine course catalogues, rare text book, student term papers about the school or community artefacts (trophies, flags, uniforms, donated objects, memorabilia), audio-visual materials and other items. They document not only the history of the school but also often reflect the history of the community, state, or nation. Developing a school archives provides a valuable service-learning opportunity for students and creates a lasting legacy from which future students will benefit.

AIMS:

To collect, chronologically document, preserve and exhibit The Assam Valley School’s history for the future generations.

AVSA OBJECTIVES:

  1. To be a repository for the collection and preservation of historically valuable documents relating to the history of the school or the community, which otherwise would be lost.
  2. To enable students to take up an activity that would give them an opportunity for hands on experience of the operation, function and marketing of an Archives or Museum.
  3. To develop the programme gradually and expand it during the course of time.

We can conclude by quoting Larry J. Hackman, New York State Archivist, (1985) “Students can benefit in several ways from researching their school’s history. . This is history that is near at hand and that has a direct connection to their lives.”
