Quizzing

Quizzing has had a long and honourable history at Assam Valley School. Today quizzing is often taken as a superficial activity largely due to the proliferation of quiz programmes on television. But in fact, quizzing sharpens three crucial skills which are never out of date, despite the omniscience of Google and other search engines.  They are quick recall, awareness of one’s surroundings and curiosity about the world.  It is no longer a question of “GK” – general knowledge – which earlier meant learning by heart lists of mountains, capital cities and the like. It is now a question of general awareness. 

If the academic or professional backgrounds of really good quizzers are examined, it is generally found that they are better than average students, have varied interests, are aware of their surroundings, and in adult life often go on to successful careers. Rajdeep Sardesai, and Raghu ram Rajen, for instance, first came to prominence as college quizzers.

There have been several intra-school quiz programmes in school and the response is always enthusiastic. Our students have taken part in inter-school quizzes with distinction.  For the past two years we have been selected in the among the top teams to qualify for the New Wiz School conducted by eminent journalist Rajdeep Sardesai.  Finally “General Knowledge” (we still use this term) is an examined component of the educational curriculum in lower school. And AVE usually has a “Basing” (quiz column) to which I have contributed now and then.

We offer Quizzing as an activity at the Lower and Upper School levels.
