The Public Speaking Workshop organised by Head of English Department, Dr. Pooja Jain Benjamin and Lower School English Coordinator, Mrs. Vinita Watts, was conducted from 21 June to 2 July 2021 for the new students of AVS.
The whole aim and purpose of this workshop was to build students’ confidence and comfort so that they could share their ideas and views whenever and wherever needed. The first thing talked about was – ‘What is Public Speaking’ and the discussion went on to why the fear of speaking- causes, effect and solutions. Students learnt that Glossophobia is the fear of public speaking.
The workshop, over 10 fruitful sessions, had fairy tales, tongue twisters, turncoat debates, storytelling, books/movies/music club, extempore speaking, role play, situational conversation, quizzes and a feedback session for Upper School students and sharing of essays, creating riddles and tongue twisters, learning different genres of books and a quick quiz on it too for Lower School students.
Nilay Dhakal, Parthiv Gargo and Shashank Agarwal from the outgoing batch pitched in to moderate 3 sessions. An actor, voice over artist and a public speaker, Vijay Vikram Singh was invited as a guest at one of the Upper School sessions, where he spoke about building confidence and dealing with failures. Initial reluctance and apprehension turned into comfortable and unbiased conversations.
