Debating

Debating is a skill many of us will need at some point in our life. It helps us take an argument to a more reasoned and sophisticated level where you learn to respect people with diametrically opposing views while you try and convince them to see things your way. As you hone your skills, you garner the ability to think critically, to question established practices and mores and to also take a completely different stance on very controversial issues.

At AVS, students are encouraged to join the debating activity which takes place once a week in the afternoons, where they are taught techniques and formats. They also participate in Group Discussions and Mock Debates. Students keen on debating are engaged for thirty minutes thrice a week on current global issues, quick discussions on various topics and vocabulary enhancement. Apart from Inter House Debates, students also get the opportunity to represent their school at various Inter School debate competitions.

Debating gives students the confidence to articulate their thoughts publicly, to be able to research thoroughly, to collaborate, to reason and to have a broader worldview. Debaters learn to be more open minded and accepting of views to which they do not subscribe.
